Final days of the Tide's Online Streaming:
Hey Folks - We are sorry to announce that, as of October, we
will no longer be able to provide an online audio broadcast
of The Tide. Congress, the record companies, artists and their
various lobby groups, in their collective wisdom, have determined
that we should pay royalty fees for music played online even
though:
1. We already pay those fees to BMI and ASCAP based on the station's
annual revenue.
2. Paying fees to play the exact same music we have already
paid for is like getting two bills for eating one meal at a
restaurant.
3. Our website doesn't generate any revenue - $0. Knowing that
most radio stations' websites don't generate any revenue, these
titans of brilliance have still decided that we should pay based
on the possible future revenues of online broadcasting. That's
like having to pay tax on a $100 million lottery prize if you
buy a ticket because you "might" win.
You can sense our frustration with the record companies. Failing
to heed decades of warnings about the changing technology of
music delivery, they now expect others to pay for their intransigence.
We will miss bringing you the music and hope we can bring it
back someday.
Thanks from all of us at the Tide.
